We all know that Walt Disney World is the most magical place on earth, which makes it a fantastic place to celebrate a loved one’s birthday! We’ve all seen the special Happy Birthday buttons around the parks, but what does it take to pull off a fantastic birthday at the parks? Just a little bit of planning and the rest of the magic will follow!
My youngest child has the misfortune of having a birthday just about as close to Christmas as you can get, so this year we decided to treat her with a special trip to Walt Disney World that would fall ON her birthday. Our family of six are seasoned Walt Disney World park veterans so we weren’t intimidated by the holiday crowds, so we booked a three night trip between Christmas and New Years. This was our first time celebrating a family member’s birthday IN the parks and it was fantastic.
Do a little planning in advance
We decided to make this birthday celebration a trip a surprise, and since we were going to be traveling during the very busy holiday season we were sure to make our can’t-miss plans in advance. A trip to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for your little princess, or one to the Pirate League for your little pirate or mermaid can make for a really special birthday moment, and will also make for some fantastic pictures. These special experiences can be booked as early as 180 days prior to your trip, so make sure to get those appointments made as soon as you can.

Don’t keep the birthday a secret!
When you are booking your stay, also be sure to let Walt Disney World know that you are celebrating a birthday – I was sure to mention it every time I contacted guest services prior to our arrival and we were presented with our cute birthday button upon check in at our resort. If you are working with a travel agent, they can pass your celebration info on to Walt Disney Travel Company as well to make sure that it is shared with the resort.
Include a special meal in your celebration
One of the absolute best parts of any Walt Disney World vacation is THE FOOD! When celebrating a birthday for a person of any age, a special sit down meal can be a fantastic experience and chance for some fun birthday attention. We celebrated twice with delicious meals at Olivia’s Cafe at Disney’s Old Key West Resort and again at the Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom. Both venues brought out a birthday cupcake for our daughter and we were able to sing and toast to our birthday girl. The Crystal Palace brought an adorable birthday card as well. If you are celebrating an adult’s birthday, there are many fantastic options for unforgettable meals including the California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort or Le Cellier steakhouse at Epcot. They are sure to acknowledge your celebration as well!

Let your birthday person be the star!
Set up your plans for the actual birthday to focus on the birthday person and their favorite things. Our family wore Magic Bands in our daughter’s favorite colors of pink and purple and rode all of her favorite rides such as it’s a small world and Enchanted Tales with Belle.
Soak up the Cast Member magic
Walt Disney World Cast Members make a special point to acknowledge the birthday guest – our daughter wore her birthday button all four days of our trip to maximize the number of birthday greetings received! Cast members really zone in on those fun birthday buttons and make a point of greeting and engaging with the birthday person. If a Walt Disney World vacation fits into your schedule over a family member’s birthday, you will not be disappointed in all the extra magic that comes your way.
