One of my favorite destinations to visit is Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay. It is always the highlight of my Bahamas or Caribbean cruises while sailing with Disney Cruise Line.
You can get a beautiful view overlooking the island from the ship. Nothing but beach, ocean and umbrellas. Disney Cruise Line has its own dock, so there is no need for tethering. You can step right off the ship and start exploring!
Castaway Cay has a few different areas, Family Beach and Teen Beach, where everyone is welcome and Serenity Bay for those guests 18 and older.
When you step off the ship, there are towels right at the end of the gangplank for you to grab before making your way off the dock. No need to bring any towels from the ship. It’s all included. Make sure you bring your Key to the World stateroom key and photo ID for security to reboard the ship after your day at the beach.
At the end of the dock, you can choose two different options to get to the beaches. Either take a leisurely walk along the path or you can head to the tram station that picks you up and brings you to the Family/Teen Beach tram stop. If you want to head to Serenity Bay, you can switch to another tram at that stop and it will take you to that adults only beach.
There are so many fun activities to do on Castaway Cay. Some of the highlights are renting bikes and exploring, snorkeling, paddle boarding, rent jet skis. There are a ton of excursions to choose from that are offered through Disney Cruise Line and just about anything you can think to do at a beach destination. There is even a big floating platform, Pelican Plunge, at the Family beach that you can swim out to and sail down the waterslides into the ocean. What fun!
If you are so inclined, Castaway Cay hosts a 5K and anyone is welcome to walk, jog or run the course. You can sign up at Guest Services on the ship when you first board. It’s free to all guests and you even get a cute “medal” on a lanyard after you finish.
Or you can just plop down in the nearest beach chair or a hammock for a snooze.
The water is so beautiful on the island! The water is usually very calm since the beaches are in a protected inlet. I like to get a float, grab a tropical cocktail and head out into the peaceful ocean. Only one time have I seen big waves and that was on the Serenity Bay beach, but it was so much fun playing in them.
Lunch is provided on the island at Cookie’s and Cookie’s Too, plus another buffet near Serenity Bay. This is included in your cruise fare. It is a variety of fresh salads, fruit, jerk chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and even soft serve ice cream. The buffet near Serenity Bay serves delicious steaks, also.
Don’t forget about those delicious tropical drinks. They are an extra, but can be charged to your stateroom using your Key to the World card. I personally love the Mango Mojito. Yum!
There are a couple shops on the island, “She Sells Sea Shells and Everything Else” and “Buy the SeaShore”. You can find a lot of Castaway Cay exclusive merchandise here, along with other essential needed for the beach.
Castaway Cay also has a kid’s club, Scuttle Cove. You can drop the kids off by checking them in using their kid’s club bracelets from the ship. There is an entire area that is dedicated to water activities and outdoor activities for the kid’s club. Drop the kids off and go enjoy some adults-only time at Serenity Bay beach.
Keep an eye out for meet and greet opportunities with your favorite Disney characters that make appearances on Castaway Cay. It’s a great photo opportunity with one of the Disney ships in the background.
The only downside that I can think of when it comes to Castaway Cay is that you have to leave at the end of the day!
