Ideally, when we book a Disney Cruise we think happy thoughts, fingers crossed and lots of pixie dust that it will go according to plan. For the most part, it does. However, you never know what will happen. There are many factors we don’t plan on during our cruise. Someone’s medical situation can delay or reroute you, weather conditions or other emergencies. Whether it’s the Fantasy, Dream, Magic or Wonder, it can happen. Spoiler, even the Wish may have it happen.
Depending on the situation Disney may just alter your itinerary. Your planned port may be changed to another. The time of port times may change or you just completely miss the extra stop. Heartbreaking I know! If you miss your port altogether, any excursions booked through Disney will be refunded. If they are booked outside of Disney, that varies on the provider and if there was Travel Insurance with them. One of the reasons why it’s safe to book with Disney. Disney will improvise and have a “Magical Day at Sea”. Which is just another day at Sea… but with a little bit of extra Pixie Dust sprinkled in.
If you miss Castaway Cay (yes it can happen due to weather and wind) you will have the Dance Party moved into the Atrium and may even see several characters out and about on a stroll throughout the decks on this day. Usually, we see a character or 2 roaming around but this is pixie-dusted. We’re talking 4 or 5 characters within 5 mins of standing in the atrium area. Strolling around, snapping pics and mingling with guests. Worried about the Castaway 5k? You still participate, just on the 4th Deck around the ship and will get your medal afterward. Not as scenic, but you can say you ran 3.1 miles in the middle of the ocean. Righteous Dude.
You won’t get compensated for skipping a port. It is in the Cruise Contract you sign that all itineraries are subject to change or be cancelled. Again, heartbreaking. Life happens and sometimes we just have to Let it go. You can always go to Guest Services and see what they are offering onboard. Sometimes they can let you know what has changed- characters, activities, and event wise faster than the Navigator App will refresh.
