Sweet pillows of heaven; this is how I describe Mickey beignets available at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
If you are unfamiliar with beignets, they originated in France and came to the United States, mainly in the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana. They can be for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or a tasty dessert (or for me, dinner). They are fried, light and fluffy pastries covered in powdered sugar.
Lucky for me and you, they can be found in Walt Disney World and Disneyland; of course with a little Disney magic sprinkled on!
Beignets in Disneyland
My first experience with a Mickey-shaped beignet was in Disneyland and they have now become a staple treat for my family on every visit.
My favorite spot to get a Mickey beignet in Disneyland is not on the map! They are located at the Mint Julep Bar. This is a walk-up window on the back side of the French Market restaurant in New Orleans Square. To get there, take the path as if you are going to board the Disneyland Railroad and the window is behind you to the left.
They come in packs of 3 for $4.99 or 6 for $8.49 and are served in a paper bag. What I love most is they have seasonal flavors for toppings: pumpkin in the fall, peppermint in the winter, and blueberry lemon for Mardi Gras. You can, of course, get powdered sugar all year long!
You can also get Mickey-shaped beignets from Café Orleans also located in New Orleans Square. This is a sit-down restaurant. Because of this, your Mickey beignets come with a dipping sauce: fruit coulis and house-made vanilla bean crème Anglaise. Plus, they have seasonally flavored beignets and dipping sauces as well, like gingerbread with vanilla sauce and peppermint mocha stuffed beignets, topped with peppermint ice cream. Totally delicious!
Beignets are also available in Downtown Disney at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen Express. These beignets don’t come in Mickey shapes; they are the traditional squares, but they taste just as great (some even argue they taste better)!
Beignets in Walt Disney World
Those of you who are Walt Disney World regulars, don’t worry! You can get Mickey Beignets in Florida too! But only in one location: Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter! Well, two, but let me explain.
Both locations are next door to each other but serve totally different beignets. You can get your traditional Mickey beignets at Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory.
You can order 3 ($4.49) or 6 pieces ($6.79) and add on dipping sauce: caramel, raspberry or chicory coffee ganache for $1.99. They are listed on the dessert menu, but you can totally disregard that and have them any time of day!
The other location is right next door at the Scat Cat’s Club (still inside the main building of Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter). This is a full-service bar that dishes up boozy beignets (or as they like to call them, Baton Rouge Beignets)! Parents, don’t worry, you can bring your kids to this lounge! They have games for the kids to play while you enjoy your beignets!
Now, back to the boozy beignets … I don’t think there is anything better in this world. You actually infuse the liquor in the beignet! Kahlua, Baileys, and Rumchata! I can’t choose a favorite! Check out the before, during, and after!
Beignets at Home
My favorite place to eat beignets are in Disney, but if you’re in between trips you can make Mickey Beignets at home!
I like to use Paula Deen’s French Quarter Beignets recipe as my base and then I add a Mickey twist.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 envelope active dry yeast
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 cup evaporated milk
7 cups bread flour
1/4 cup shortening
Nonstick spray
Oil, for deep-frying
3 cups confectioners’ sugar
Directions
- Mix water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl and let sit for 10 minutes.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs, salt and evaporated milk together. Mix egg mixture to the yeast mixture.
- In a separate bowl, measure out the bread flour. Add 3 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture and stir to combine. Add the shortening and continue to stir while adding the remaining flour. 4. Remove dough from the bowl, place onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Spray a large bowl with nonstick spray. Put dough into the bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a towel. Let rise in a warm place for at least 2 hours.
- Preheat oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.
- Add the confectioners’ sugar to a paper or plastic bag and set aside.
- Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness and *HERE IS THE MICKEY TWIST: use a Mickey shape cutter to cut out Mickey-shaped heads.
- Deep-fry, flipping constantly until they become a golden color. After beignets are fried, drain them for a few seconds on paper towels, and then toss them into the bag of confectioners’ sugar. Hold bag closed and shake to coat evenly.
