Should Disney Bring Back FastPasses?

FastPass

I am lucky enough to have been able to visit Walt Disney World multiple times since it reopened in July. I have noticed that with each trip, crowds seem to increase. While this is a good sign that we are all headed in the right direction, it can be frustrating due to the temporary suspension of the FastPass system. It seems like the days of walking on busy attractions are now few and far between. With spring break right around the corner- many of us are wishing FastPasses would return!

As Disney theme park attendance has risen, we are hearing more stories about increased standby line times and even limited reservations for park passes. Starting January 1, 2021 guests are allowed to park hop starting at 2 pm with a valid park reservation. Many of us saw it as a good sign that Disney brought back park hopping. Could FastPasses be next? We really hope so!

virtual queue

Right now, Disney World is operating parks at 35% of total capacity. While that may seem low, it is actually a larger number than some may think. For instance, it is believed that full capacity of Magic Kingdom Park is between 85,000 and 100,000. This means that 35% capacity could be upwards of 35,000 people. That is no small number! People are starting to travel again, vaccines are being administered, and we are noticing increased park attendence. We all understood the temporary suspension of the FastPass sysytem, but now it almost seems safer to bring them back. People are intimidated how long socially distanced lines look, lines are becoming very crowded and wait times are growing. Guests could definitely plan their day out more efficiantly with the use of FastPasses.

Another idea floating around is that Disney will add virtual queues to multiple (or all) attractions in lieu of the FastPass system. Now, don’t panic when you hear “virtual queue”! This does not mean the exact same system as Rise of the Resistance. Disney is definitely experimenting with Rise of the Resistance and trying to perfect a virtual queue system. Perhaps once this is perfected, it could be added to other attractions. Also, Rise of the Resistance is still a very new and very popular attraction.

One thing is certain, Disney is always progressing and always moving forward. Hopefully, either FastPasses or an even better system will be implemented before the 50th Anniversary celebrations start in October!
