The first day of summer may not be until June 21st, but summer temperatures have certainly arrived at Walt Disney World. Spending your summer vacation at Walt Disney World brings thrills, excitement, and memories that will last a lifetime … but it will also certainly bring the heat. As you start thinking about your summer vacation plans to Walt Disney World this year, let’s check out our top 5 ways to beat the heat.
1) Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate –
With the heat and humidity of summer in Central Florida coupled with walking or standing for long periods of time, it is important to keep drinking water and sports drinks to keep you hydrated. Listen to your body while you are enjoying your vacation, nothing like heat exhaustion or dehydration to ruin the fun. Try using refillable water bottles that are insulated to keep your beverages cold all day long. If you find yourself without water, you’re in luck as most quick service/food locations will give you free ice water. You will also notice that Disney has recently started having water refill locations in the theme parks to refill your bottles. If you are looking for bottled water, there are plenty of carts throughout all the theme parks that sell water and sports drinks to help keep you hydrated through the day.
2) Enjoy Early or Later Hours at the Theme Parks –
Arrive early to enjoy the park before the crowds begin to build and the temperatures rise. Early mornings can be pleasant during the summer and are a great time to get some pictures, have a nice breakfast and go ahead and get in line for some of the popular rides. This will put you in the front of the line and not have to worry about long wait times in the heat. A tip that we always follow is to try to make an early morning dining reservation so you can get in before the park opens. Another option if you are a Walt Disney World resort hotel guest is to take advantage of morning Extra Magic Hours when offered. For even more fun in the mornings that will help beat both the heat and the crowds is to reserve Early Morning Magic. Early Morning Magic is a separately ticketed event at Magic Kingdom Park where you get in early to enjoy Fantasyland or at Hollywood Studios you get into Toy Story Land to enjoy the popular rides and bonus, you get a delicious breakfast to enjoy. Now that’s a win-win!
Not a fan of early mornings, no worries! Disney has all the night owls covered. As the sun sets the temperatures may drop, but the fun keeps going! Nights at the theme parks are so magical with twinkling lights, nighttime shows and fireworks and of course those cooler temperatures after the sun sets. The benefit to summer is park hours are often extended and Walt Disney World Resort hotel guest can take advance of Extra Magic Hours during the summer that can go as late as 2 am on select nights. If you love nights at Walt Disney World, you should check out the special ticketed event Disney After Hours this summer to enjoy Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and a special Disney After Hours at Magic Kingdom Park that is Villain themed. How fun is that?!?
3). Enjoy a Frozen Treat –
Walt Disney World has no shortage of delicious frozen treats. From Mickey Ice Cream Bars to Dole Whips, these frosty treats are a perfect way to take a break, cool off and relax in the shade while enjoying your frozen snack.
4). Find air conditioning or a shady spot –
During the hotter part of the day try to plan some time for shows or attractions that are indoors. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom you can enjoy the Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo – The Musical which both offer a wonderful show and a nice place to cool off. At Magic Kingdom Park take an extended shopping trip through the Emporium, check out The Country Bear Jamboree or make a late lunch reservation in a nice air-conditioned restaurant to take a break from the mid-day sun. At Hollywood Studios there are several air-conditioned shows to enjoy including For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along celebration (nothing like a little snow to cool you off) and at Epcot as you travel around World Showcase check out the various shows in different countries that are in air-conditioned theatres.
Remember shade is your friend. While waiting for a show or parade try to find a shady spot out of the direct sun. It’s also important to take breaks during the day and sit back for a little and enjoy the shade, it is a vacation after all. Find a bench in the shade and kick up your feet for a little. Another way to beat the heat is to take a break mid-day during the hottest part of the day and head back to your resort hotel for a nap in your nice air-conditioned room.
5) Enjoy some water fun –
Walt Disney World has amazing pools and water parks to help keep you cool on those hot summer days. Take some time and enjoy that dip in the pool after a morning in the parks, it’s refreshing to float and relax in the water.
For an ultimate day of water fun visit, one of Walt Disney World resorts amazing water parks. Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon offer a wide variety of family fun while keeping you cool this summer.
If you want to stay in the theme parks but need to cool off a bit, find a water ride. There’s nothing like a trip down Splash Mountain to cool you off during a hot day at Magic Kingdom Park. Another option while at the theme parks is to find the splash play areas such as the child’s splash fountain at Epcot between Future World and World Showcase or at Magic Kingdom Park in the Storybook Circus area where you have the Casey Jr. Splash ‘N Soak Station. These are great options to keep the kids cooled off, but trust me from experience pack an extra change of clothes and shoes for the little ones because they will get soaked!
Summer is a fantastic time to visit Walt Disney World, but make sure you are prepared for the warm weather. Before you leave your nice cool air-conditioned resort hotel room, pack your theme park bag full of summer day essentials. These include water/sports drinks, cooling towels, water misting fans, sunscreen, and sunglasses. This will ensure you are prepared for a fun summer day at the park. What are some of your summer essentials while visiting Walt Disney World? Until next time, stay cool!
